Slate Frames

Slate frames were the most common embroidery frame used for centuries by professional embroiderers.  These frames are similar to modern frames but the side slats are drilled with holes where a peg is inserted to fine tune the size of the frame.  Heavy duty fabric is stapled to the bars and the project fabric is sewn to this.  Thread is wrapped from the project fabric to the slats to keep the fabric taught along the sides.  You can check the picture from L'Encyclopédie de Diderot et d'Alembert showing the professional use of Slate Frames in the 1700's.  One of the problems with hoops is when you move to a new part of the work they will crush and distort any stitches the hoop is placed over.  This problem is avoided using a slat frame, these are better for larger pieces.
